Chemin de fer de La Rhune
Chemin de Fer
de La Rhune
Located in France's far southwest,
the Chemin de fer de La Rhune is a rare survival of a once-extensive form of traction: 3-phase, high-tension AC.
The Strub rack system is used, to cope with the formidable 1in 4 (25%) grades. The CF de La Rune is only 4.2km
(2.6 miles) long, but it rises 817 metres (2356 feet) to the summit of the westernmost peak of the Pyrenees. Opened
in 1924, the rolling stock, built in 1912, consists of chunky box motors pushing 2-car trains. AC motor characteristics
control speed to 8kph (5 mph) up and down hill. The line is open for passengers only from March to October, but
conveys staff and supplies to the summit all year.
Maps, diagrams, stills. All digital. Dolby 2.0. SC. 46min.
