French Steam Survivors
France's most successful preserved railway is the metre gauge Chemin de Fer du Vivarais, once one of the largest
secondary railway systems in France. In preservation since 1969, the railway has five working Mallet locomotives,
plus other engines, and several classic Billard railcars, mostly of the design of the 1930s. This segment was filmed
in May 2000. It is 57 minutes long. Diagrammatic maps are included. NOTE: This DVD segment includes the full content
of Veterans of the Vivarais, previously issued by Railstuff on VHS.
The 60cm gaugeTramway de Pithiviers à Toury, was for most of its life a roadside sugar beet line. It was
built in 1892 by Decauville as a demonstration line, and grew to 80km including branches and sidings. It closed
in 1964. A short section of the line is preserved. Seen in this production is 0-6-2T No. 10, a Decauville Type
10, No. 360 of 1902.
The Chemin de fer de la Vallée de la Doller or Doller Valley Railway is a one-time SNCF standard gauge line,
close to the Rhine and the German border. It has been preserved since 1976. There are two active steam locomotives
and a representative collection of stock.
